I completed the 38 days and I can drink milk. It took courage to drink that first glass, but I did it and could not believe that I did not spend the next two days in pain.

I was unable to tolerate any milk at all prior to the program. Even the dairy used in making bread would give me symptoms. When eating out I took lactase enzymes with my meals because some of the food might have dairy in it.  After years of use, the lactase enzymes did not seem to be helping as much as they did in the beginning. I began using a once a day product and that with the enzymes was doing a fair job of saving me from the discomfort of dairy in my diet.

I was diagnosed with lactose intolerance in 1994, so it’s been more than 10 years. I loved cheese and began to notice that I was extremely uncomfortable after eating cheese.  I was so sick sometimes that I couldn’t even go to work many mornings and other times I would be so worn out from the symptoms I couldn’t go to work at all!  The severity of my symptoms increased with time. My last day taking the Lactagen program was December 4th.  It was followed as instructed drinking the proper ounces of milk for breakfast and dinner.  All went well, but believe me I was holding my breath every minute of the day expecting those horrible cramps and many trips to the bathroom.  Well, it didn’t happen my body has accepted the change of Flora so far and I have incorporated back into my diet: yogurt, cheese, milk and ice cream.  I have been very careful not to overload my intestinal tract but when I walked into the store on the 8th I wanted to buy every dairy product I had been denied these past 15 years and daily it takes my total discipline to limit what I eat.

My symptoms used to include gaseous expulsions; rumbling in stomach;  mid to severe cramping in stomach; if I enjoyed my favorite bowl of cereal in the morning, I would have to pay for it dearly by an imploding stomach full of cramping gasses by mid-afternoon and wondering where I would be when the explosion occurred. It helped that I have a great sense of humor about it, but it was extremely embarrassing. I would always pre-plan my escape route.

I did not use any other medicinal remedies. I tried Lactaid a few times but it was so nasty, I gave it up quickly. Nothing could compare to real milk. Since I did not suffer many years and only for a few months, I was also still somewhat in denial that I could even be lactose intolerant.
